Revisiting Open Street Map Vector Data in TransDEM with JOSM

#1 Post by activerail »

Looking over the past information and tutorials from 2011, et. al. I was wondering if the newest version of TransDEM has improved the method of placing vector data (specifically railroad lines) into a dem created by TransDEM. Specifically, when trying to repeat your tutorial on TansDEM and JOSM when I bring up the map of the Moramanga area, the program won't let me get the map as states that " it doesn't support area south of the equator". How do you get around that?

The vector processing in TransDEM has not changed since, I would think.

Which program refuses to work for the southern hemisphere, JOSM or TransDEM?

I'm working on your tutorial of creating vector lines (railroads) using TransDEM and JOSM. The tutorial focuses on the town of Moramanga in Madagascar. I can bring up the TransDEM Map Tile client but when I put in the map coordinates, the program says it does not support southern hemisphere

Right. You usually navigate to the area of interest via the zoom function in the map tile preview window. All of Madagascar is south of the equator, the northern point about -11°.

What you cannot do is to acquire a map clipping crossing the equator. This is because northern and southern hemisphere have different coordinate ranges in the UTM projection. And since there are very few railway lines that actually traverse the equator (Kenya for instance) and nobody has attempted to recreate any of those for Trainz with TransDEM until now, an automatic zone transformation feature from southern to northern hemisphere or vice versa has not been implemented.

Use the mouse zoom feature (LMB to zoom in, RMB to zoom out) and the pan buttons to get to Moramanga, then the large right arrow button to transfer the coordinates to the right hand panel and then "Get Map". You'll find more detailed explanations in the map tile tutorial in the TransDEM main manual.
