Re: Ground textures in TS12 - mini map

I suppose that a clean TS12/SP1 installation with the TransDEM textures V3 imported in the original state would yield a positive result. And I suggest to try this. Trainz allows side-by-side installations since TS2009.

Hello Roland,

I have a complete fresh copy of TS12 with SP1.

I opened TS12 - installed Transdem textures V3 - yellow warning appeared ( Warning: The texture 'normals.tga' is a uniform color. ).

Made a new route and still get the same result.

There must be something missing. In minimap I see the textures but nothing within the real route. Something to look for tomorrow ;)

Best regards

Hello Roland,

As my memory wasn't again very helpful ( :( ), I looked in every pencil notebook I use, concerning Trainz 10.

What did I install in trainz 2010, so that transdem textures are visible in minimap and in the route itself?

I couldn't find a connection, until I returned back to Transdem and looked in every part of the program. In the export to Trainz Basic files, dem and ground textures, I saw a path reference to Custom colour textures. The path was referring to ModelerMJ Google earth textures.

When I installed Webcolors.cdp into TS12 and reopened my created routes in TS12, I had the ground textures visible in minimap and in the route  .

This post was probably not necessary, but an illness reduces the functioning of my memory and other parts of my body.

Regret any inconvenience made.

Best regards

Kurt

I just created this:

It's a clean TS12 installation including SP1.

The texture warnings should be harmless. Nevertheless, I will follow Zec's suggestion how to modify the normal maps to make them fully compliant again without generating unwanted side effects.
How did you get your ground texture to look so clean-looking? What zoom level is that on the map tiles server? I was going from 16-17 and at that level it was extremely blurry. Are you using the Open Street Map?

Thanks again for answering Roland!

For these examples I always apply the map ground texturing to the 5m grid in Trainz. You get four times as many pixels as with the 10m grid, making it sharper. This allows you to work with 1:24k topo maps - which is the source here. This roughly equals zoom levels 15 to 16 with map tile services like OSM.

Would you mind posting a screenshot(s) of what your export screen looks like in TransDEM? It's much appreciated! :P

Also, you only do the 1:24k maps from the National Map Viewer right? I had the data selection by the counties--not sure if I'm missing something here.

Thanks again!

These are my settings:

In the original screenshot the data source was the 1012 edition of the 1:24,000 topo map of Oklahoma City. Both the modern series and the historical collection are in GeoPDF format and National Map Viewer is one of at least three gateways to download them. For the National Map viewer I suggest to select "Download by current map extent" again. The maps in question are either "US Topo" or "Historical topo maps".

Another source are the 1:24,000 topo maps acquired via National Map WMS. It's an older series with no specific date given. The TransDEM main manual has a tutorial for this data source.

In the Map Tile server, should the scale also match 1:24000? This is the part that's hardest for me to grasp, as when I am inside of Trainz my view is blurry while your above photo is crisper. (I have added the 5m grid option)

It may appear crisper but it is still only one pixel per 5 m. You need a certain viewing distance to make it look sharp enough.

1:24,000/1:25,000 is the limit for the 5m grid, as is 1:50,000 for the 10m grid. (The map tile client shows the approximate scale for the zoom level. Scale, however, is absolute only when applied to paper maps. On a computer monitor it's always somewhat relative.)

The mini-map is even more restrictive: 64 x 64 pixels per baseboard (since TS2009).
