Geo Data - Ireland

#1 Post by geophil »

Ordnance Survey Ireland (OSI) offers an online map viewer:

http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/

Several zoom levels, down to street level. Also includes ortho imagery.

You can take screenshots but have to geo-reference them manually. Diagonal corner georeferencing will suffice. Cursor coordinates are shown in the status overlay at the lower left corner. The coordinate system is the new Irish Transverse Mercator.

A while back I figured out a way of getting on to the ESRI WMS server which allowed direct importation of Irish maps per the WMS method. Unfortunately, when I tried to use it a couple of days ago the service no longer seemed to work. Visiting the ESRI site I could not find any reference or links to directly access the web maps, the whole site seems to have gone up-market and orientated toward business users. I'll keep trying and report back if I stumble on a solution. Failing that, the Irish OS as noted above is still available and Open Street Irish coverage seems better than it used to be, too.

There are some maps of Ireland now at http://www.sabre-roads.org.uk/maps/. These are hosted by the National Library of Scotland (NLS) and they are compatible with Map Tile de-facto standards.

The same instructions apply as for "Historic UK":

Copy the following code section into a text editor, save as an xml file and import into TransDEM with the Map Tile Client / Settings.

There are 2 tile types configured:
"Map" for "Bartholomew - Ireland - Quarter Inch to the mile, 1940". 1:250,000. Maximum zoom level 13.
"Other 1" for "British War Office - Ireland - One Inch to the mile, 1941-43 - (G.S.G.S. 4136)". 1:63,000, Maximum zoom level 15.

Code: Select all

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="iso-8859-1" ?>

<TileServer version="1.0" >
  <Provider name="9 Historic Ireland" >
    <URL addr="http://geo.nls.uk" prefix="maps/ireland/bartholomew" postfix=".png" standalone="1" type="1" >
      <Matrix prefixClm="/" prefixRow="/" prefixZoom="/" minZoom="1" maxZoom="18" order="2" />
      <Mercator origLat="-90" origLon="-180" signLat="1" signLon="1" projection="4" />
    </URL>
    <URL addr="http://geo.nls.uk" prefix="maps/ireland/gsgs4136" postfix=".png" standalone="1" type="4" >
      <Matrix prefixClm="/" prefixRow="/" prefixZoom="/" minZoom="1" maxZoom="18" order="2" />
      <Mercator origLat="-90" origLon="-180" signLat="1" signLon="1" projection="4" />
    </URL>
  </Provider>
</TileServer>

OK Thanks for setting that all up for me. I can display the maps in the tile server. Now I need to read the next bit of the tutorial on how to get it into Trainz :)

Hello Phil.

Sorry to bump an old thread but I was hoping to start a new project based in Ireland and I've discovered that there appears to be no opensource geodata available anymore. I tried the NLS and OSI sites. The NLS had no data and the OSI is pay to use.

Are you aware of any other sources of free geodata?

Regards,
Innis

Has there ever been free geo data?

Not sure if there has been. I was hoping that the same types of data would be available from OSI as from OS UK. If not, it doesn't matter. Thanks.

G'day geophil,

...there most certainly was, Roland...

G'day PFX72,

...you might find this site still useful...

http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V1,715316,828308,3,10

...although it does take a little extra work on your part, Innis, to georeference the data (and crop the maps)...

Hi Jerker.

That's most useful. I may be back asking for help! Just so I'm clear in my own mind, this will mean I can take the data from the OSI site and apply it as a texture to a flat baseboard only. There is no DEM data that goes with this?

Cheers.

But that's the same data source I opened this thread with, isn't it? It's the screenshot method, though, a small bit of extra work georeferencing yourself. Not the fancy ready to use downloads you'll find for some other countries. But I think it was for those maps that I added the new Irish Transverse Mercator grid to TransDEM.
