Query about a function

I know that an answer to this question does not exist. But I can try anyway. With the 'map tile servers' function in TransDEM, there is a check box at the bottom right reading 'max rel point dist'.

I'm perplexed as to what rel refers to. If anyone finds out within the next 50 or so years, it would be great to know. I emailed Roland about it and got no response. I might need a time capsule.

From the TransDEM main manual (p 119 in the current edition):

Maximum relative point distance: Path mode only. Specifies the maximum relative
distance of a point in a polyline to the centre of the closest map image. If any point
exceeds this maximum distance, an additional map image will be acquired with the
respective point closer to the image centre of that new map.
