1. Western longitudes and southern latitudes are negative.
2. SRTM files are always named after their southwest corner.

This means S24W051 covers all coordinates from -24° to -23° lat and -51° to -50° lon. In other words: S 23° 30' W 50° 30' is at the center of this 1x1 degree DEM.

Slowly move the cursor to the southwest corner and you will see the coordinates approaching S 24° W 51° in the status bar.
