Need some assistance with kml file made in Google earth

Hello everybody,
I need some assistance with the following :
In some cases, I used to do the following
1) Go to Google Earth, set some placemarks - make a path - and save all into a kml file.
2) In Trainz opened my route for editing
3) Opened Transdem - opened my dem - opened my raster map - opened the kml ( created in Google earth ) and then created a track spline
4) Up to now - this method did always function
So today, again I did all 3 steps - but with the created kml file I'm getting an error extracting route vector data from .trk file
I just cannot find the error I have made??? Here is the link to the kml file.
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/190 ... _DEPch.kml
Thank you.
Best regards
Kurt

I downloaded your file and opened it without problems and it looks all right to me.
But why a .trk file? That looks like you are importing track splines from an existing Trainz route, not from a kml/kmz file.

Hello Roland,
Thank you for your assistance

.
I did another test with the same kml file.
Went in Transdem and opened my dem, my raster map and opened the kml ( as route )
I then created a new map, new UTM and the track spline - received no errors - imported all in Trainz2010. Opened the route in Trainz2010 and the track spline was visible.
Where the spline points are visible, I know that the spline points gives me the placemark positions of the created kml file.
Closed the route - went into CMP - opened another testroute for editing - went to transdem, opened a route ( different kml file ) and created without any problem a track spline.
Tried it with the "stubborn" kml file and no luck - I'm getting the same error as before - extracting route vector data from .trk file.
Very strange.
Best regards
Kurt

Which TransDEM command are you calling that produces this error?

Hello Roland,
Your answer starting me thinking. Roland is probably trying tests with the golfbrekerZEB_DEPch.kml file - however he probably is getting no error at all or another error
So I started again with both tests routes and noticed the following
1) In CMP in opened my Kurts coastal route ( name of the route = Kurts coastal ( 2 words )
Opened Transdem - opened my dem - opened my raster map - opened the golfbrekerZEB_DEPch.kml ( as route ) and then use Trainz menu - export & create : track splines ( or the button in the toolbar )
and I receive errors writing file "[route vector data]" error extracting route vector data from .trk file
2) Then in CMP I opened KURTBRUG ( name of the route = 1 word )
Opened Transdem - opened my dem - opened my raster map - opened the golfbrekerZEB_DEPch.kml ( as route ) and then use Trainz menu - export & create : track splines ( or the button in the toolbar )
and I receive errors writing file "[route vector data]" error extracting route vector data for export
3) In Transdem - I kept everything as it was and created a new map ( Kurt brug ), new UTM and the track spline. I received no errors. Imported the route in Trainz2010 without any errors.
In CMP I opened the Kurt brug route for editing
And in transdem I closed the route golfbrekerZEB_DEPch.kml and opened the route Depanne_oostendecrossings.kml ( here is the link
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/190 ... ssings.kml.
I used the Trainz menu - export & create : track splines and received no errors.
Best regards

Hello Roland,
Still don't know what is wrong with the original golfbrekerZEB_DEPch.kml but I wanted to find a solution.
So, on the www went for a search for some kml check tool and downloaded the Northgates KML builder.
Installed the tool, opened the golfbrekerZEB_DEPch.kml and the program corrected the file

( - some ids were not unique ) and I saved the file into golfbrekerZEB_DEPch1.kml
Opened my tests routes for editing - went into Transdem and click on the toolbar button to create the track splines
and it worked (

) in all my test routes.
Best regards
Kurt

Kurt,
this error is related to reading vector data from the Trainz route, not from any kml or other vector data file. Before TransDEM adds any vectors to an existing Trainz route, it reads all spline/vector data already there, in the route. Therefore, at the moment I still do nor see the connection with the contents of that particular kml file. I played again with it, did a couple of im- and exports with Content Manager and some editing in Surveyor and - until now - have not been able to trigger that error.
What I have seen is that your kml file contains many placemarks. TransDEM interprets them as single point polylines. I am not sure whether it tries to export the placemarks into Trainz but I doubt it.

Hello Roland,
I had a look in my testing routes, to see if a spline was already in the same position. This was not the case.
I don't know what is happening exactly with the placemarks but one thing is sure the placemarks have the position where the spline points are visible when a track spline is created within the route.
Best regards
