Crashes at startup on Win 11, partly fixed.

#1 Post by SAR704 »

As mentioned, the program seems to crash at startup, after entering the licence key umpteen times. It initially asked for .dll files. But I transferred them.

Running it from an SSD. Just switched from Win 10 to 11.

Is there a solution? Would be the version from at least 2024.

Always install locally, and always from the setup package. There are several more files outside the program directory in different other directories that TransDEM relies on.

By locally, what are you referring to? I tried installing in documents, with the same issue.

Here's a paste from the crash report:

On a new machine, use the TransDEM install setup exe. Don't copy anything over from some previous installation elsewhere and don't use a shared drive. Just install to the default program folder as suggested. Also install the MS C++ runtime libs that come with the TransDEM installer. Its installer will find out whether the current version is already there. If you do it otherwise, you could mess up the relevant Windows registry entries for TransDEM.

The current set up is one low capacity SSD, and the HDD. They are both running. I didn't actually copy anything, except for the .DLL files. But I need both drives active at the moment, unless I spend a lot of $ on a larger SSD. It was a communication blunder.

I considered the runtime stuff outdated. But won't hesitate to permit it next time I run the installer. I have since uninstalled and reinstalled TransDEM several times now. Still not quite sure what to do.

I had TransDEM install in the Documents folder of Windows. Maybe this was a stuff up too. There are also issues with read/write to the C drive, just like there was when I started using Win 10. I'm not really that fussed as to where it installs. But it would be good to get it running.

It is not practical to disconnect the old HDD unfortunately. I'm not adept in this, and it's cost prohibitive through a tech.

Edit: Even after creating another account, the same crap occurs unfortunately.

A fully working C drive is essential. The operating system files reside there. The C++ runtime libraries reside there, even when updated from a separate package. The Windows Registry resides there. And, by default, users reside there as well, and particular their "hidden" folders and files. All of those resources are used by TransDEM.

I just updated TransDEM on another Win11 machine of mine with the latest patch from the website. It went as smoothly as expected.

I clicked on an .LGB file, and the program loaded normally for the first time on Win 11. But when I click on the main executable, it still crashes. I can't figure out what's wrong. But maybe you might have an idea, Roland.

Not trying to be a nuisance, or shame your program by any means.

Latest patch from which website?

I really don't know how to help here. Have you considered replacing your C: drive? A clean and reliable system environment is a precondition for any application software.

But keep in mind, that all the updates in the last few years are geo data feature updates only, they do not alter underlying program logic or fix anything there, nor do they modify any workflows.

The C drive is a near brand new SSD. I am considering upgrading to a higher capacity SSD. But not sure what to do with the old one when it's replaced. I assume is literally near the size of a USB stick from what I've heard.

The line at the bottom makes sense. I know that patches are intended to make necessary improvements to whatever issues there may be on a larger scale.

I might consult the dude who installed Win 11 to find out if there are potential remedies to various programs that don't load in a traditional manner, or at all.
