UK 1950's,60's,70's HD historic maps

#1 Post by LandYrailwayman »

I'm new to TransDEM and struggling somewhat with the historic mapping services.

NLS is an excellent online web-browser map service, which I have spent (and still spend) hours surfing and exploring. In getting TransDEM I thought it would be fairly easy to get access to this data, but so far not the case. I have had some initial success with the HD 1910's maps, which have good coverage, but are not ideal when I want to model routes in the 1960's. But the other historic map options presently just give a black window of an image referring to possibly a different map tile server. They also appear to be limited to lower resolution smaller scale maps 6 inch 1:10,000 etc, but I'm not sure because of the above problems. Meanwhile I going to continue with modeling a 1910's route using the 25 inch map tiles, as a subject for learning TransDEM and also because it is of interest, but looking beyond this I want to be able to access other more recent historic mapping.

Much of the discussions here on the forums are quite old and the NLS digitization of their HD maps seems to be continuing. The main NLS page gives links to the various scales and lists what is available:

https://maps.nls.uk/os/

The 1:1250/1:2500 are growing and last year the the 1973 edition maps (this year the 1974) have come out of copyright and are being added.

https://maps.nls.uk/os/25inch-2nd-and-later/

Assuming these are not accessible through the (presently none-working) channel mentioned above, will/can these be added in a similar way to the 25 inch 1910's series. Also there is a complicated issue with this series of maps concerning editions and revisions. Some adjacent maps are decades apart (original survey 1950 and Rev. C 1973) which is an obvious problem that there is no immediate solution to till NLS add the missing editions, but where they have there may be 3 or more editions of a given map giving a stack of 20 years to choose from. This 'works' in the browser interface, but how can it be made to work in TransDEM. The most recent map for one may be 1957 showing route and track etc, and next to it 1971 with the route closed and the track all gone, and one has to dig down to get an edition consistent with the adjacent 1957 map. When following a route will TransDEM be able to select the appropriate editions?

Thanks & regards,

What I usually do to find out about map tile addressing is to open the official Web viewer for the service and log the http traffic, see here: viewtopic.php?p=3723#p3723

I don't have much time at the moment, too many other obligations, so I suggest you give it a try yourself.
