Combining multiple scale maps

#1 Post by LandYrailwayman »

I am a newbie, having recently acquired a TransDEM license after thinking a long time, and now I'm going up the learning curve.

I had difficulties with sourcing the historic mapping, and still have issues, but more of that in a separate post (https://www.forum.transdem.de/viewtopic.php?t=725), meanwhile I eventually got the NLS 25" 1913 maps to work and began playing with the Simple Route Editor with initial success. However I was dissatisfied with the area covered by the map tiles along the various routes, and began creating pseudo-routes (like random roads, coastline and river edges) to force more coverage. Then I got a "Your Route is too Complex" error.

I'm trying to model Lancaster, railways (Galgate to Hest Bank), trams and canal including Glasson Dock and Morecambe (yes I know, but the LNWR and L&Y merged in the end) with aspiration to move further up the WCML in subsequent cycles, so I know I have a number of routes all in close proximity, but I don't think I'm starting with a particularly large area, so removing routes is not something I want to do. I did remove almost all of the pseudo-routes and the map-tile error went away, however after scrolling the blue bar for a while it hung claiming the map-server was unresponsive. I'm also back at the problem of the blank areas between the route and I'm not clear how these are filled, though skimming the manual and the forums hints that filling in is possible. Then I come across this example given (https://www.forum.transdem.de/viewtopic ... 2461#p2461) on the version 2.6 announcement page. Several scales all combined into one? Is this truly 1 and will they all appear on the UTM tiles when it comes time to make and export them?

How is this done (the combining), I have an idea how to get a single map (assuming I can get that particular server source to work), but I don't know how to do the next bit. Can a good tutorial be made to explain/walk me (and no doubt others) through this?

Thanks & regards,

L&Y Forever!

You can combine any any number of georeferenced raster maps, and at different map scales, just with the "Open georef map" function. This could be single maps or groups. Load the smallest scale first, and the larger scales on top. When exporting as UTM tiles to TransDEM, TransDEM will analyse the contributing map clippings for each UTM square and determine an appropriate texture resolution.

If acquiring map clippings along a path and the connection breaks, the clippings gathered so far should be safe. Restart with a modified path, shortened accordingly. You may have to wait a while, though, because some servers use throttling to manage the web traffic.

Yes, and don't make your path too long or have too many sub-paths. TransDEM uses a very simple algorithm to follow the path and may get confused.
