I'm wondering where to get DEM data from Mexico

The global data sources SRTM and ASTER GDEM should cover Mexico. I am not aware of a national resource, which does not imply it does not exist, of course.

I have used SRTM 3 arc sec DEMs for Chihuahua and Sinaloa three years ago, in preparation for my Chepe trip. There were a few holes in extreme terrain, particularly for some of the lowest bits of the Barranca del Cobre. That was SRTM version 2.1, the one available at USGS. Some of the SRTM later versions (post-processed externally) might have these holes filled, but I have not investigated.

Just by chance I came across the Inegi (Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía) website.

They operate a seamless server for DEMs (Modelo Digital de Elevación, MDE). Looks quite interesting. Terrestrial, derived from 1:50,000 topo maps, 1 arc sec nominal resolution.

Unfortunately, the data format is .bil, a format TransDEM does not (yet) support. It has been put on the to-do list and should not be that complicated to implement.

Two geo data sources from Mexico have been made usable in TransDEM 2.2:

INEGI WMS

Information (in Spanish) Servicio Web de información geográfica

Coverage and detail vary.

Access data for the WMS is part of the sample configurations, downloadable from my website. The setup includes a layer preselection.

An explicit custom WMS protocol version parameter is also set. This parameter, new in TransDEM 2.2, must be provided to obtain readable results. This WMS has no default, and the default in TransDEM will not be understood by the server.

INEGI Seamless Server DEM

These DEMs (Modelo Digital de Elevación, MDE) are terrestrial and have been derived from 1:50,000 topo maps. Nominal resolution is 1 arc sec. I have checked for Barranca del Cobre (Copper Canyon). No voids here, quite a contrast to SRTM.

Sistema de Descarga del Continuo de Elevaciones Mexicano.

The server can be slow at times.

Data format is ESRI .bil. You will need TransDEM 2.2 to read it.

The download server for the DEMs (MDE) can now be found at:
