Post subject:  Accessing DEM Files via USGS

Am referring to instructions in TransDEM Trainz Edition, Release 2.6, page 13, item 2a to 2g. It seems that the suggested method for accessing the SRTM website to obtain DEM files has recently undergone some very radical changes and is now a more complicated process.

The link - https://dds.cr.usgs.gov/srtm/ brought up a 404 error message. Further investigation recommended I register for a USGS account which is a simple process. Navigating the USGS website trying to find the appropriate SRTM page is a nightmare and I've not yet resolved the problem.

Has anyone else been faced with these issues and if they have, is there a straightforward solution that can be shared.

Many thanks (in hopeful anticipation)

SRTM download has changed again. SRTM has been renamed NASADEM for the latest version, in stages between 2014 and 2018. (I had posted that some time ago, but the initial/original link is dead as well.) You can get the data here now:
https://e4ftl01.cr.usgs.gov/MEASURES/NA ... 000.02.11/
(registration required, which is free)

However, I would avoid SRTM/NASADEM wherever you can obtain terrestrial data of 50m or less.

Hello Roland,

Many thanks for the information - hopefully this will resolve the current issue.

I am a relative novice in these matters, but picking up on your point re avoiding SRTM/NASADEM wherever you can obtain terrestrial data 50m or less - do you have any recommendations. Re US Trainz projects, another individual has recommended "30M SRTM Data Downloader" - https://dwtkns.com/srtm30m/ - do you have any views?

Your help much appreciated.

The optimum for Trainz is 5 or 10m, or 1/9 or 1/3 arc sec. You'll get those from the USGS National Map Viewer.
