Updated: Web addresses have changed as a merger has occurred between Geogratis and the Government of Canada. Links have now been updated: Vector data for Canada can be found at: http://ftp2.cits.rncan.gc.ca/pub/geobas ... /nrwn_rfn/ DEM Data for Canada can be found at: http://geogratis.gc.ca/site/eng/extraction Note that the Western half of Canada is quite mountainous and as such, the DEM files can add up to be quite large fairly quickly. If merging DEMs across a province or even half way for British Columbia, you can count on a file size in excess of 2 GB. Just something to be aware of. Anything beyond 2 GB will cause TranzDem to choke and crash- even the x64 bit version. Many thanks to Gisa for his initial tutorial videos in this endeavour. |

Thanks for noting the links Novaflyer. Some of this information I found in the manual and the other stuff I did some digging on the sites for. I didn't know that mountainous terrain equals a higher DEM size. I suppose that makes sense. That or areas with the most drastic change (generally, mountains fit into this category). DEMS across a province hahaha...that'd be HUGE! BTW, it's Mrgisa, not Mrgiza (I'm not a pyramid ). 8) Gisa ^^ |

Select a Province, then the .SHP link in the provided link for rail vector data: http://ftp2.cits.rncan.gc.ca/pub/geobas ... /nrwn_rfn/ Select an area on the map. Be sure to check "View NTS grid" box in the map window. : http://geogratis.gc.ca/site/eng/extraction. Once you have obtained the map grid codes, go to: http://ftp2.cits.rncan.gc.ca/pub/geobas ... d/50k_dem/ and click on the desired map prefix code to obtain the desired DEM files. |

Another update: The Canadian Open Data site is not the easiest to navigate. But the 0.75 arc sec DEM is still there. Top page "Canadian Digital Elevation Model" https://open.canada.ca/data/en/dataset/7f245e4d-76c2-4caa-951a-45d1d2051333 Specs (Data is now in GeoTIFF format): http://ftp.geogratis.gc.ca/pub/nrcan_rncan/elevation/cdem_mnec/doc/CDEM_product_specs.pdf Product index as KML file (to use with Google Earth) http://ftp.geogratis.gc.ca/pub/nrcan_rncan/elevation/cdem_mnec/index/cdem_index_250k.kml Direct download (organized by index): http://ftp.geogratis.gc.ca/pub/nrcan_rncan/elevation/cdem_mnec/ Alternatively, you can combine index search and selection via this portal page: http://ftp.geogratis.gc.ca/pub/nrcan_rn ... ex_en.html Themes | Elevation | Canadian Digital Elevation Model (CDEM) |

New to the forum from Canada and this great software. I downloaded what I thought were DEM's through the extractor in Canada (which seems to be the only thing working right now for official DEM data from the government of Canada. When I try opening the DEM I recall an error (I wish I recall which one I believe it was missing parameters or something). So I tried some of these other links that are in service and more recent. They either are not working or appear to be hanging. What I did get that downloaded was a dataset folder followed by a DEM.tif file and metadata folder. Within metadata I have these 3 files. CDEM.xml CDEM_pdoduct_specs.pdf MNEC_specs_product.pdf It appears the DEM.tif is just an image and not data, so I'm probably in the wrong spot. I've watched the tutorial online that happens to follow Canada. However I'd like better than 70m or 30m (whatever the shuttle program DEM is). Any help is appreciated. Thanks Sean |

I just tested myself. It appears they have changed the data format once again and their GeoTIFF contains a parameter that TransDEM does not recognize. Fortunately, they also offer ESRI ASCII grid and that seems to work. |

Appreciated! I'll check into that when I get home to work and read up on the manual while I'm at lunch. Thanks Sean P.S. I love how most of the links no longer work in Canada Looks like Geospatial Data Extraction in post above is working. I'll let you know how I make out. Thanks again Sean |

The other portal still exists: https://www.nrcan.gc.ca/science-data/sc ... tion/10785 then https://ftp.maps.canada.ca/pub/nrcan_rn ... ex_en.html They have the data by index, prefabricated, much faster than extraction on demand.
Theoretically there are also a few 1m hi-res DEMs, but again, TransDEM can't currently read those GeoTIFFs. I should look into that. |
