If you are using Map Tile Servers as I do sometimes to obtain raster maps:
Did you notice the field on the tile server dialog that lets you determine the size of the tiles? I have it set at 512 pixels, but you could experiment with larger sizes, like 1024 pixels, or some other value.
And yes, I often draw a path in an assumption of which way the track goes off the map, then use the "Map images along path" mode to get new tiles. It isn't elegant, but it gets the tiles.
Too bad that the tile server doesn't show nearby tiles and let you select them individually.
I've never used the Web Mapping Services function, so I don't know ways that might help.
I have begun downloading topo maps from the USGS national map client after downloading ".tif" images for the DEMs. I'm hoping that I can reduce the offsets I accidentally introduce by using the topo maps instead of individual tiles.

Oops. If you are mapping outside of the United States, our National Map client might not be useful.
