I was losing the place so I decided to start over with the Muengsten Tutorial. I loaded the DEM. When I tried to load the Raster I was informed that the DEM would be closed. This is exactly the difficulty I have had trying to create my first route. Any pointers?

Raster maps in TransDEM come in two flavours, plain and georeferenced. Only the georeferenced flavour goes along with a DEM (and vector data). If you try to open a plain raster map, any DEM will have to be closed first, because the plain raster map is just an ordinary bitmap image, without any information on geographic location or size. In plain form it does not yet fit into the DEM environment. So, instead of "Open Raster Map" click on "Open georef. Raster Map".

Thanks

That did it. Presently I am attempting to draw a Flow Chart to guide me through the intricacies. Ultimately I want to restrict my efforts to using OS maps and Dems to plot dismantled railways.

I'll be re-doing the Weißeritztalbahn tomorrow because I cannot get higher scale map downloads.

Enough for tonight.
