Thank you geophil for the SRTM recommendations. I've now got my DEM data, created my raster maps (79 in total for a, yes, long route) but am not sure how to save them so that they will all pull up when I want to fine tune the route lines. I did draw in a general route line and got the raster maps ...

The link that the TransDEM pdf points to is a web page that is no longer available. I tried using Earth Explorer for obtaining the DEM files from SRTM data to no avail. Can someone point me to the correct site for downloading my .hgt files?
