Simple you create your tile width further as mentioned. I use 13 baseboards, and 3 UTM tiles. Then you use the method I mentioned to have lower quality UTM images with more detail on top.
If your absolutely insisting on detailed UTM's then your going to wind up having to draw more track lines. But ...

Re: Downloading more broader maps for a route effectively
Depends how far away it is as well. The way I see it if my train can't see it in the image it's not worth bothering. In fact what will likely happen is I will remove baseboards down the road as I find areas that are simply not visible to the track even in images from the air.

Re: Downloading more broader maps for a route effectively
I believe it defaults to 2. So again you must use the simple route editor in TransDEM and draw a line representing the track (or really any feature you want to include if not track). You can select a huge square that's only the area it will apply to. Then you select that window I showed you for the ...

Re: Merging raster maps
I'm not sure to be honest. My method if I needed to would be to delete out the area you need the UTM before doing anything and create another DEM and small route. Then merge it in by way of Trainz.

Re: Merging raster maps
Yes I believe we are on the same page here. I'll try to explain just to be sure.

Re: Downloading more broader maps for a route effectively
Page 31 of the English manual you'll see an image. On the left hand side is Route Filter. Make sure you have a route set in simple route editor. This is where you set the number of baseboards. The default appears to be 2 here, I was actually using 13. This is for exporting the DEM.

Re: Merging raster maps
You can add to DEM various resolution DEMS but there will be a border that you notice. Even if you use DEMS from different sources you will see this border and have to adjust it. For example I live near a border between Canada and USA where I am getting the better USA data for most of the route, but ...

Re: Downloading more broader maps for a route effectively
If your creating a simple route in DEM you can specify how many tiles wide you would like (I do 13 for example forget what the default is). For UTM's the default is 2 (but I've set it to 3).
Does that help? If not let me know.
Thanks

Re: Larger route methods and questions
I decided to go with the Level 15 OSM for baseboards, and add 3 wide UTM to route on level 19 Bing Orthos.
I got an answer pretty quick in adding in Lake Ontario near the tracks. As I dug down deeper to allow for the lake water to show up (as DEM here is usually the last surface value of land. The ...

Re: Larger route methods and questions
Sounds like a plan.
I built another version of the route with ground textures of Level 15 Open Street Maps, and then adding in Level 19 Bing Ortho UTM's. I haven't imported the route into Trainz yet as I have a bit of UTM creation to do first.
I'm at work now, so I'll see how this looks tonight ...
